Roots go deep. Heritage is priceless!

What a priceless point in time was this day... last week,
Thursday, April 16th, 2009!
My Dad, Pop, gave me 6 hours
not working, not on vacation or at PK with family
just 6 hours with ME!
I learned so much!
"That's where I grew up Kate! I used to walk those sidewalks to school"
"See that front porch over there?... That's where your mom was having a slumber party with girlfriends... they all came out the door when I came to pick your mom up to go get our wedding rings in Abilene.... she was 17! She was beautiful"
(and she still is!)
"See that little house over there... an onion came flying by my head one evening after your mom had just about all the teasing she could take...
The neighbors were outside and laughed as Mom sailed an onion from her cooking right by my head after I'd run out the door from popping her!"
You can imagine the big grin on my mischievous Dad's face as he went back to that day!
"That old grocery store was moved... used to be back there where that church is now... your grandaddy had a grocery store here for a little while too while me and Aunt Bette were kids."

Right across the street from the place where Pop was born was the first oil well he and his Dad drilled.... there is was... pump jack still in place
He'd just told me about carrying buckets of liquid nitro glycerin poured into cylinders and dropped into the wells to release the black gold.
He CARRIED the cylinders!!!! a teenager... HE CARRIED LIQUID NITRO!
He worked for the company that came up with the idea to Frac a well...
He and his dad were on the crew that did it the first time in Oklahoma.
I didn't know that!

The old Ray schoolhouse in Burkett
A landmark in Aunt Bette's memory...
This was not the entrance for the children then..
This was the arch that was the entrance over 78 years ago....
Once again her feet walked through that door with the little brother that never attended
this one of eleven schools his older sister attended.
We traveled within a 20 mile area, and oh the places we went...
How could it have been 11 schools I asked????
"I don't know... you'd have to ask your grandad?"
This was the 1st and 2nd grader's room!
A fireplace still stood in the corner of a building that still had a slate
chalkboard in place.

"Kate, does Elly still have the wild plum tree I pulled up for her?
NO?... well, let's get another one"
Still the little boy who took from the wild things to bring into
his domains... at least this was not a fawn, or a skunk...
this one was not breathing, yet it was wild and would tie the past to the present.

Why was it that every house we passed one or the other would say something like
"isn't that where your girlfriend ___ or boyfriend___ lived?"
Guess country kids just loved everybody!
Then.... I see a different sort of look come across their faces and a silence that had not been
the norm on this day....
"See those big oaks over there? well...you just wouldn't believe Kate.... You just wouldn't believe" and I understood that
"they just wouldn't go into that 'gate' again"... they just looked over and beyond into past
places they'd choose to forget.
Then we saw big catfish heads...
trophies with which my Dad identified...
"There's big catfish in that creek Kate"... and I knew HE KNEW from experience.
He'd told me about "tickling the fish" and
catching them by the gills...
Truly Tom Sawyer was walking with me today.
How proud he is that once again there will be those who will play and fish in this place.
It gives continuance... it gives rebirth.... and it gives him joy!

for me too... as I see his heart!

"See that bridge over there Kate?
we used to climb up there while the carnival was going on
and drop paper bags of water on the people who walked around."
Once again, I saw the sprightly joy of a little boy who loved surprises!
I even got to see the place where they would wait under the little rock
bridges with a hammer or purse on a fishing line.
When people would stop to pick it up... they'd reel in the line and
watch their prank fulfilled.

"See that old stick frame over there???
well that was the old brush arbor where our church held revivals"
I could almost hear the piano they rolled into the arbor for the meeting.

Oh my.... still standing were the outhouses with the "thrones" still holding the
square wooden seats.
This was my Dad's first school, The Burkett schoolhouse was now
the Burkett Community Center... doors all locked.
I could imagine those sweaty little boys coming in from recess getting drinks from
this "watering hole"
I could see my Dad remember the halls and just exactly which placed housed the
principal that TRIED to keep this wild child in line.

"Guess he knew who put that skunk 'sac' on the bus of the opposing team...
but really all I'd done was get the 'sac'.. it was my friends who put it on the bus!"
Again, the grin.... the boy was there in fr0nt of me.
"That's the tree where we buried it until the bus got here...
yes, that HAD to be the tree... under the big oak!"

"How many times did I run around that wall there?"
I wonder if kids around here still do?

And then it was time to finish... it had begun to rain, and Aunt Bette wanted to "find"
Granny, Thursa Jane, our namesake... or at least hers.
we looked and looked
Aunt Bette kept saying
"I KNOW she's here somewhere... I've just gotta find her"
I thought.... "I don't think she's going anywhere...
maybe we can come back to find her later"
BUT...82 years brings great perseverance,
and it wasn't until the rain came down in earnest that she decided....

"Guess we'll have to do this again.... I know she's here somewhere...
Do you think we could make another day of it and do this some more?"
WAS SHE KIDDING?
ABSOLUTELY.... these moments are priceless to me
not just about heritage and memories.... but
about time!
About who we are... and about .... well....I suppose you hear my heart here!
Priceless.... absolutely, priceless
Time is a gift you can only give once on any particular day!
I understood the gift I received! Thank you Dad and Aunt Bette!

Resurrection weekend, "everything changed"! ... yes it did precious ones, yes it did!

What a week this has been...
and yes,
Em's word that kept being echoed in my thoughts was....
"because of "this" everything changed!"
I must concur my sweet one... I must agree.
...Politically things keep swirling,... a bow or a cultural deference? WHO KNOWS?
...economically, who knows what is the truth!
...pirates holding a brave captain who gave himself for his crew... and military wait and see stance? What is that? pardon me if this offends, but why not use our marksmen and take them out all at once! (which, as I write this seems to be what they did!... captain going home for a chocolate bunny with his family)
...and each of us trying to decide... so many things
... tea party protest, or does what I think even matter?
...BECAUSE OF THIS, EVERYTHING CHANGED!
I find myself boiling events and things down to this...
What is REALLY important?
and today, the day most of the Christian world celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus...
I find much of my answer!
Life....Freedom....Truth.... and underlying it all......LOVE!
I offer a glimpse of my weekend...my TRUTH...the LOVES of my life... and
my FREEDOM as a child of the LIVING LORD!
Elements of a Texas Resurrection weekend tend to be a bit different I suppose!
boots by the diaper bag alongside Nana's bunny treats... yep... True Texas!
My garden revealed something I'd looked for the past 3 years! I'd pulled up the root runners of my passion vine for the last few years as they refused to bloom.... Then this morning! LIFE!

Family is sometimes beyond the bloodlines yet bound by HIS blood line! We loved seeing the Connell crew... how that little one has grown!
Eli can now pick up swords with the best of 'em... and well... I suppose that means he can
get whacked with the best of em too!!! sorry!!! BOYS... I just love them!
Thank you girls for our gift! "we find this treasure in earthen vessels"... your words bring more than you know! And just as the rain starts to fall... KG brings in blossoms from the garden and the yard... THANK YOU PRECIOUS ONES! you bring us such joy!

Sunday morning.... I wonder if there were butterflies like this one on the way to the tomb?...
I wonder if they scattered as the women ran to tell the news... the TRUTH... ???
I loved seeing this guy this morning as we left!
Spring always means a new beginning to me.... LIFE!

Then Nana's... not much can be said other than this is what "home" is...
Welcome,
Peace,
Family,
generations of good traditions (there are no so good ones in the world I'm discovering)

The kids table was clearly shy 3 very obvious omissions.... that was sad!
But little EE was so excited about getting to sit in a real big girl chair and not a
high chair or booster... some things change year after year.
But then... some things remain...good food, good feelings, good gatherings!

Our family has become decidedly more health conscious through the years... as is evidenced by the cuisine choices of this holiday.

But then I can say... once again....
Nana no one can set a table like you do!
YOU ARE A CONSUMMATE HOSTESS!
We love what you do...
and we love what it means to be
FAMILY!

Lord, I ask today whatever I do betray what I believe...
I ask that I recognize the Truth that is in me...because Your Word says that Truth is YOU!
I ask that when the deceiver comes to kill steal and destroy, (and he does and will!) that I will recognize immediately his ploy, his lie, and his strategy!
I thank YOU for Family,
I thank YOU for Truth,
I thank YOU for Freedom,
and I thank YOU for LOVE...
the kind that allows me to have the gift of LIFE freely because YOU paid the price for me.
I believe You when You tell me that "it is not by works... but the free gift of God to those who choose to believe". I love YOU LORD... and I thank YOU with everything in me!
Because of THIS.... everything changed!

I won't cook lamb again!!!!

"I am soooo glad that we live under GRACE and not the law"....
this said by my wonderful teacher daughter as she prepared a "shank of lamb",
unleavened bread, bitter herbs, and other Passover elements and explained their part in
the Passover Feast.
Troy quickly retrieved the offensive element that had been roasting during naptime.
Everyone at the C house had decided something had to go... the lamb or the kids...
sooo.... Poppy was the rescuer...
and none too soon I might add! Lamb is NOT our favorite food!
"What makes this night so different?"
" Here try this boys...
Jesus would have had some of this when He ate Passover meals with His family"....
KG explained to her little brother and cousin.
and NO.. not all of what we did this night had to do with teaching about the Passover,
some of it was learning a bit more about each other and what we've been called to be as
brothers and sisters in the body.
.... we can be so different, and yet, the ties that bind will do so for
purposes beyond our understanding~
"Tahtee, can I cut the chocolate cake??? I know just how to do it, so don't you worry!"
I didn't, and when I saw the cake, a big smile just couldn't help but split my face!
My beautiful servant of a granddaughter certainly had cut desserts before, but clearly
those desserts were of the rounder, pie shaped sort!
I just love it... had to have her mom take a picture before we served the dessert!
Then, as we adults talked about Christmas, Easter, Passover, and calendars....
These precious ones watched
THE LONE RANGER!!!!
I am so thankful for each part that I meet of Christ's church, His body, His bride.
I love it that we are all so unique and individual...
I love it that the Creator, was infinitely creative with us... allowing us
such wonderful opportunities to be more than we could ever be on our own!
"I praise God for every remembrance of you"....
Hope your Palm Sunday was as blessed as mine!
looking forward to a week that brings FREEDOM and NEW LIFE!
and mom.... I would have loved to have heard Brahms Requiem...
I know it was
a night to remember!
... and I must add... our little EE has decided that unleavened bread is one of her
FAVORITE FOODS!!!!!
